The driver of a Dodge truck struck an apartment building in the 600-block of East Marquette Road.

The homeowner told ABC7 nine family members were sleeping inside at the time of the crash, which caused extensive damage to the building.

The family had no idea what was going on. One moment, they are fast asleep. The next, they are under a pile of rubble with a pickup truck in their living room.

It’s like we’re not safe in our own bed, because you just got foolish people doing things like this.

Lateshia Hollingsworth, relative

Leslie Johnson lives there. Her sons and grandson were sleeping in the living room when the truck crashed.

“If I wouldn’t have heard my neighbors screaming, I would thought someone threw a bomb in the house. They blew up the house,” Johnson said.

A child and two adults suffered minor injuries, police said.

The family said 12-year-old Jahad Anderson was the most seriously injured and was brought to the hospital in critical condition. His two uncles who were also sleeping in the room suffered minor injuries.

Many relatives were in town this weekend for a large family reunion. The crash has put a damper on the festivities.

“It’s like we’re not safe in our own bed, because you just got foolish people doing things like this,” relative Lateshia Hollingsworth said.

The Dodge’s driver, a female of an unknown age, was also injured, CPD said. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for minor injuries in good condition. Officers issued the driver three citations and took her into custody.

According to police, the woman and two men got out of the truck through the sunroof, with the two men running off while the woman remained behind. Police said she was the driver, however, neighbors said one of the men was driving.

Whoever was behind the wheel was apparently going at a high rate of speed. The truck leveled a light pole, which was anchored in concrete across the street, before crashing into the building.

“I didn’t expect it to be so much damage,” a neighbor named Rihanna said. “How could one person cause so much damage to one building?”

Crews were on the scene early Saturday morning, making temporary repairs to the building.

Stunned family members sat outside, hoping to get back inside to collect some clothing and other items to get them through the next few days. They are hoping police find the other people who were in the vehicle quickly.

“That’s the main thing. We want to get these people off the streets,” Hollingsworth said.

Repairs to the building are expected to take some time, but the landlord has told the family they’re welcome to move into a vacant unit on third floor until their unit is repaired.

Area One detectives are investigating the crash.

Further information was not immediately available.
