RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — For many, the Fourth of July, is a time to enjoy good food, fireworks and spending time with friends and family. But for our pets, the holiday can be a source of fear and can cause anxiety due to the loud noises and unfamiliar activities.

As celebrations for the Fourth of July ramp up, the Village Rantoul is reminding residents of ways to keep their furry friends safe and healthy.

One of the best things you can do is bring your pets inside when loud noises are happening. Putting them in a crate, giving them treats and keeping them busy with toys can also help. Officials also recommend playing soothing music or turning on the television to mask the sound of fireworks.

It can also be helpful to give your pet exercise earlier in the day. This could tire them out and it may make it easier to keep your pet distracted once the festivities begin. You should also make sure to keep your pet far away from any party good like fireworks, sparklers and charcoal.

Finally, prepare for the unexpected. In the event that your pet gets out, making sure they are microchipped beforehand and wearing identification increases the chances that they will return home safely.

And, Rantoul said, residents are reminded not to use illegal fireworks. Instead, visit public fireworks displays that are created by professionals. Rantoul’s fireworks display will take place on Thursday, July 3 at 9 p.m. at the Rantoul Aviation Center.
