Olivia Munn Says Fans’ Negative Comments Caused Her to Pull Out Her Lashes

Olivia Munn got candid about what kickstarted her trichotillomania.

Munn, 44, opened up about experiencing the disorder, which causes people to pull out body hair, during a Monday, June 30, episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast. In the clip, host Dax Shepard brought up the first time he met Munn at a party, causing the actress to reveal she had been dealing with trichotillomania and pulling out her eyelashes at the time.

“Trichotillomania [is] specifically people pulling hair, so it could be hair at the top of your head,” Munn explained. “For me, I’ll feel like, ‘Oh this eyelash feels like it’s gonna come out,’ and when you pull it, there’s a second of pain and there’s a satisfaction and then immediate regret,” she added.

Munn shared the first time she felt the urge to pull at her lashes was when a picture of herself made it into a tabloid and fans poked fun at her.

“I was going to a very small event … I asked a [costume shop] what is the ugliest dress you have and they found this blue prom dress with pom pops on the side,” she explained. She claimed she was playfully trying to make it into the “worst dressed list” of the evening.

“Then I did and I couldn’t believe it worked,” she quipped, noting she was dating Chris Pine at the time. “I left Chris’ apartment and there were paparazzi outside his house and I was carrying this little wallet and they caught photos of me. I did the horrible thing which was to read the comments.”

“That began my trichotillomania,” Munn added. She did not share if she still struggles with the disorder.

Munn has been open about her health in the past and announced in March 2024 that she underwent a double mastectomy to treat her breast cancer diagnosis. She later showed off her scars in a Skims ad in October 2024.

“When I look at the scars or how my breasts look different or how clothes fit on me differently, I feel a lot of gratitude,” she said at the time. “The way my body looks is just a representation of how hard I fought.”
