Why Rangers did right thing letting Zac Jones walk

The Rangers made the correct decision regarding Zac Jones by choosing not to qualify the 24-year-old defenseman who had been playing in the seventh position consistently, which ultimately allowed him to become a free agent.

Now, after 115 games interspersed over the past five seasons while perceived as no more than a depth figure by a succession of coaching staffs, Jones will finally be able to gauge his worth, not only on the market but through a different set of organizational eyes.

GM Chris Drury gave Jones’ party the opportunity to search for a trading partner after the UMass product told The Post on Jan. 1 that he felt he had been “rotting away” through repeated healthy scratches.

The market obviously did not materialize to any meaningful degree, and Jones remained on the roster for the duration for the season. The puck-mover played in four of the final 10 matches after a 14-game run that commenced in late February. In total, he played 46 games, chipping in with one goal and 10 assists while on for 21 goals for and 21 goals against, averaging 17:15 of ice time per.
