The 16-year-old was bitten on the leg, bicep and wrist and was pulled to shore by fellow swimmers and surfers before receiving emergency first aid from an off-duty paramedic on the beach and being airlifted to hospital.
He remains in a serious condition.
Witness Archie Scally said he was simply admiring the view when he happened to capture the harrowing video of the shark following the group into shore.
“We were just sort of just admiring the view, taking a few videos and then next minute we just see all the surfers make their way in screaming and yelling,” Scally said.
“It was pretty confronting, especially all the kids that were there for the attack.
“Looking back on the footage, we could make out the shark attack, and you know the shark coming all the way into the shore.”
Beaches along the Tweed Coast have now reopened, but many remain empty of swimmers due to further sightings.
Video has since surfaced of a close call with a shark at Greenmount at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, just 20 minutes north of Cabarita Beach.
Surfer Futa Hashimoto claims he was chased by a shark between seven and eight feet long.
“It’s pretty big, that’s why I got scared,” Hashimoto said.
