BRUNSWICK, Ga. () — The Georgia Department of Natural Resouces (DNR) is seeking the public’s input on proposed changes to Georgia’s ‘Bird Island Rule.’
The Bird Island Rule is meant to provide greater protection for seabirds and shorebirds.
The proposed changes would include the new islands that have formed since the rule was originally passed in 1998. It would also help shield nesting, foraging and roosting sites when they are being used by the birds.

The changes would also allow recreational access to these sites when they are not active.
Those attending the meeting sessions will be encouraged to give feedback and ask questions.
Public sessions are scheduled for the following dates:
- July 16 at 6 p.m. at the Susan Shipman Environmental Learning Center located in the DNR Coastal Regional Headquarters at One Conservation Way in Brunswick, Georgia.
- July 29 at 6 p.m. at the Crooked River State Park located at 6222 Charlie Smith Senior Highway in St. Marys, Georgia.
- Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. in Skidaway Island State Park, located at 52 Diamond Causeway in Savannah, Georgia.
If you are unable to attend these meetings, comments may also be provided by email at wcscomments@dnr.ga.gov or by phone at (912) 264-7355 by Aug. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
The Board of Natural Resources is scheduled to consider the amendments on Sept. 23, 2025.
