ORLANDO, Fla. – With millions of people expected to travel for the Fourth of July, transportation leaders are spreading a message of safety on the roads.

According to AAA, 4.6 million Floridians will take a road trip during the holiday weekend, which is a record for Independence Day travel.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) urge drivers to do a summer check-up on their car, buckle up, and avoid distractions.

“We want you to plan ahead, so before you get behind the wheel, plug in that address for your GPS, be hands-free, and if you have a passenger, let them be your copilot,” Lt. Tara Crescenzi said.

With rain in the forecast over the travel period, drivers are reminded to plan ahead for potentially dangerous road conditions.

“Your tires are your first line of defense,” Crescenzi said. “Make sure they’re properly inflated, make sure they have the appropriate tread depth, make sure that your windshield wipers are working, and making sure that you’re giving yourself enough reaction time.”

If a problem happens on the road, FDOT provides free roadside assistance to stranded motorists through its Road Ranger program.

The service offers limited help, which includes a tire change or assisting with minor mechanical repairs.

Drivers on I-4, I-75, I-95, Florida’s Turnpike, and Central Florida’s toll roads can request a Road Ranger’s assistance by dialing *FHP (*347).

If a driver sees a disabled vehicle on the side of the road, they’re urged to follow Florida’s Move Over Law to allow the Road Ranger enough space to offer assistance.

“Move over, and if you can’t move over, slow down 20 miles under the posted speed limit,” Road Ranger Supervisor Garrett Popovich said. “We need to make sure that everyone gets home to their family at the end of the day.”

Drivers can check roadway conditions and view live-streamed traffic cameras before they hit the road at FL511.com
