In a move that stunned much of the baseball world, the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in mid-June. Devers, just 28 years old and regarded as one of the best hitters in the league, was seen as a long-term cornerstone of the Red Sox. The trade immediately raised questions and speculation, particularly surrounding its implications for Alex Bregman’s future in Boston.
Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow faced backlash following the trade, but later stated the decision was part of a broader strategy to free up payroll and allow for greater roster flexibility. Naturally, fans began to wonder whether that financial maneuvering was intended to secure an extension for Bregman, the star third baseman acquired in the offseason.
However, speaking during a pregame interview on NESN this past Tuesday, Breslow clarified that such an outcome is far from guaranteed.
“Payroll flexibility gives us more options,” Breslow said. “But the trade deadline is not free agency, and dollars alone don’t represent the best currency to improve the team. We also have to think about the farm system that we’ve developed, and how we may need to trade future value for wins in the present.”
Breslow praised Bregman’s impact both on and off the field, adding:
“Alex has been great—he’s more than what we could have asked for, and also in the clubhouse. Right now, we’re focused on doing everything we can to bring him back on the field. We love everything he’s brought. When the right time comes up to have those conversations [regarding a potential extension], we anticipate doing that.”
Bregman Key to Ending Red Sox Postseason Drought
Alex Bregman’s importance to the Red Sox cannot be overstated. Prior to a quad injury that placed him on the injured list in late May, Bregman was slashing .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. He has emerged as one of the team’s most consistent offensive producers in an otherwise up-and-down season.
Boston has not made a postseason appearance since 2021, and if the franchise hopes to break that streak in 2025, keeping Bregman beyond the trade deadline may be crucial. While his contract status remains uncertain, both the front office and fans are keenly aware of the value he brings.
For now, the focus remains on his recovery and return to the field. Discussions about a long-term extension, while anticipated, remain on hold—awaiting what Breslow calls “the right time.”
