A 3-year-old boy is dead after apparently shooting himself with a loaded, unsecured handgun he found while staying with his family at an Airbnb in an Atlanta suburb.

East Point Police said they were called to the home just after noon on Wednesday and found the boy unconscious with a single gunshot wound, WAGA reported. Officers found a gun near him.H

He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, where he died from his wound.

The owner of the Airbnb told WSB that the family had been there for a about a week.

Police have not said who owns the firearm the boy used or what led to the shooting. It’s unclear if any charges will be filed.

Police told WXIA that the boy found the unsecured gun and “accidentally” shot himself.

“We just want to keep stressing — it gets old — the same message every year, day after day – secure your weapons. If you can’t secure them, don’t have them,” East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan said. “A three-year-old lost their life because of irresponsibility.”
