TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tropical Depression Three, which formed off Florida’s Atlantic coast, has developed into Tropical Storm Chantal, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm is currently around 170 miles off the coast of Jacksonville and is moving north at 2 mph.

Chantal has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

“The third named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Chantal, has formed in the Atlantic as of this morning’s update from the National Hurricane Center. This is forecast to make landfall in South Carolina as a tropical storm overnight, into early Sunday morning,” WFLA Meteorologist Juliana Mejia said. “Heavy rainfall from this system may lead to flash flooding across the Carolinas through this weekend and into Tuesday morning.”

A tropical storm warning has been issued for portions of the Carolinas with heavy rainfall likely at the coast.

Chantal will cause rough waters and rip currents through much of the southeast coast of the U.S. over the next few days, but northeast Florida looks to be in the clear as the storm continues northward.
