PINEY FLATS, Tenn. (WJHL) — Rocky Mount State Historic Site went back in time to visit the year 1775 for its Colonial Independence Day event.

A “Governor Blount” reenactor read the Constitution, attendees decorated the Liberty Tree and there were plenty of activities for children, including cornhole, games and crafts. Live music and food trucks also helped to make the day.

Colonial Independence Day allows guests to experience the activities of the early settlers of Tennessee during the Revolutionary War, which was 249 years ago. Tour guides also took guests through the William Cobb House for a living history tour.

“We’ve really tried to focus on a really good balance between history and modern, by finding people who just want to come out and have a good time with their family, but also maybe just kind of want to check out something new and not just go to a firework show, but maybe go and check out the kind of buildings that our forefathers would have actually been planning the Declaration of Independence in,” Jami West, Rocky Mount’s executive assistant, said.

The exclusive Rocky Mount Pantry Ice Cream special was also available just for the day.
