Danville, Ill. (WCIA) — Denver Broncos wide receiver Trent Sherfield held his fifth annual football camp at his alma mater — Danville High School — on Saturday. This year’s camp featured a new event, however.

For the first time, the camp featured a skills camp for girls playing flag football.

“Football is not just for boys, not just for men,” Sherfield said. “If it can be for girls, for women, that would be for them as well. And they can have the same opportunities that I was fortunate enough to have and my peers were fortunate enough to have.”

The event featured footwork, catching and tackling drills. Sherfield said he plans to continue his girls camp and add more football X’s and O’s to it in the future.

Sherfield said he was impressed by the girls who showed up.

“I really appreciated all the girls’ effort,” Sherfield said. “They were focused, detailed and intentional.”

The Broncos receiver said he wanted to add the event to his camp last year and that he’s thrilled it worked out this year.

“It’s really cool to see how the game has evolved with flag, with the Olympics coming in 2028,” Sherfield said. “I think it’s great, that it would be an opportunity for girls to get involved with football.”

Girls at the camp agree with the NFL player.

“I’m really proud of the progress the sport has been making and this could really be a future for girls who don’t know what to do yet,” Serenity Martin, a camp attendee, said.

Martin also had a message for girls watching at home.

“Join flag football, we need people,” Martin said.
