URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Police Department reported an increase in sexual assaults following first-time meetups through dating apps.
The police department notified the community of this troubling finding through a post on Facebook. And, they said it’s important for residents to make a safety plan to protect themselves. This includes:
- Meeting in a public place
- Telling someone where you’re going
- Arranging your own transportation
“Consent is clear, mutual, and ongoing. It can be withdrawn at any time. No one owes anyone physical access, no matter the context,” the police department said. “This isn’t about fear. It’s about safety, empowerment, and awareness. And it’s something we all deserve.”
To help prevent further incidents, the police department recommended that community members look into Rape Advocacy, Counseling, & Education Services (RACES). RACES is a Champaign-Urbana nonprofit which provides help to survivors of sexual assault, offers free prevention education and support for anyone impacted by sexual violence. You can find additional resources on their website, or their Facebook page.
