COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) – A bill in South Carolina could mean big savings for parents if passed, making diapers, formula, and baby food tax-free.

“This is an issue that is important. This is an issue that can keep families and children out of the system. This is an issue that can keep families healthy and happy,” said Ayanna White, the Executive Director of Power in Changing, an organization to help parents give necessities to their children.

“I’m not the only diaper bank here in the state, but organizations like ours. We’re trying our best to keep up with the need, but we also do need support,” White said.

Lawmakers said it’s about giving parents a break because for families with young kids, these necessities can add up fast.

“Groceries are not taxed, I’m not sure why they shouldn’t have, you know, be treated in a similar way as groceries, that it would only help in that decision making process of expanding the family,” said Sponsor of the Bill, Representative Beth Bernstein (D – Richland).

Both Bernstein and White said passing this bill is commonsense.

“This is to keep our kids healthy and keep them secure and ensure that they have a bright future and building upon a family first foundation,” said White.

“This is not a luxury item. These are necessities, and so we need I mean, young infants need diapers,” said Bernstein.

White said one in two families across the nation are impacted by diaper needs, and this needs to be addressed in South Carolina.

The bill is currently in the House of Representatives and Bernstein said she is planning to continue to push for its passage in January.
