'Shiny Happy People' Season 2 Is Coming to Prime Video, But Don't Expect More Duggar Family Revelations

Season 1 of Shiny Happy People focused almost entirely on the Duggar family. The docuseries was greenlit for a second season months ago. Since then, fans have wondered if the series would focus on the famous reality TV family again. Season 2 will not focus on the famous Arkansas clan. Instead, season 2 will focus on Teen Mania. That doesn’t mean the Duggars will be ignored entirely, though. One family member is set to appear in season 2.

What is the topic of ‘Shiny Happy People’ season 2?

The freshman season of Shiny Happy People took a deep dive into the IBLP, the ultra-conservative Christian ministry to which the Duggar family belongs. Season 2 of Shiny Happy People will focus on another controversial religious movement, albeit one that is significantly different from the IBLP. The season will focus on Teen Mania Ministries.

Teen Mania Ministries was a controversial evangelical Christian youth organization founded in 1986 by Ron Luce. Based in Garden Valley, Texas, Teen Mania experienced significant growth in popularity during the 1990s. It reached its peak in the early 2000s with high-energy events, mission trips, and leadership training programs. The goal was to mobilize teens for Christian evangelism. At its most popular, its events could attract hundreds of thousands of teens. Concert-like worship, dramatic skits, and sermons that promoted abstinence, purity culture, and radical commitment to faith had teens hooked.

While the ministry was popular for many years, it was not without its problems. In 2015, the company filed for bankruptcy after being booted from its rented headquarters. Lawsuits and unpaid debt were the final blow to the ministry. Former participants have stepped forward to open up about the trauma, guilt, and mental health issues they’ve battled due to the fear-mongering campaigns that were commonly used during Teen Mania’s heyday.

Will any of the Duggars appear in season 2?

Shiny Happy People‘s first season leaned heavily into the celebrity status of the Duggar family and their status as the poster children of the IBLP. While the family was featured on the show’s cover art, only a few insiders were willing to talk. Jill Dillard opened up about her famous family alongside her husband, Derick Dillard. Amy Duggar King and her mother, Deanna Duggar, also discussed the IBLP and how the movement infiltrated the Duggars. Once close family friends, Bobye and Jim Holt, also appeared on camera.

The other Duggar kids declined the project, including Jinger Vuolo, who has been outspoken, in her way, about her upbringing. So, did any of the Duggar kids agree to be involved this time around? While Season 2 of Shiny Happy People doesn’t directly deal with the IBLP, one Duggar family member is sitting down for another interview. Amy Duggar King and her husband, Dillon King, will appear in the series. The duo appears in the trailer for the upcoming season, but it remains unclear what their role will be in the season.

Amy, who is the only child of Jim Bob Duggar’s sister, was not raised in the IBLP. She has been outspoken about the family’s controversial beliefs, though, and is planning a book release. Jill Dillard is not involved in the project.

Season 2 of Shiny Happy People will premiere on July 23. It is a three-part docuseries.
