Mattoon man arrested on first-degree murder charge

MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Mattoon Police Department made 11 total arrests and issued 25 citations during their recent Independence Day safety campaign.

Specifically, Mattoon Police made four impaired driving arrests, five arrests for methamphetamine and illegal transportation of cannabis and two arrests for driving while license suspended. Additionally, they issued one seat belt citation, one child safety seat violation and 23 other citations during the holiday safety enforcement.

The department was pushing the following safety campaign’s during their Fourth of July enforcement efforts:

  • “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”
  • “Drive High Get a DUI”
  • “Click It or Ticket”

Over the holiday weekend, Mattoon Police joined forces with more than 200 other state and local law enforcement agencies to get drunk and drugged drivers off the roads, push for seat belt use and enforce speeding and other traffic laws. This specific effort included high visibility enforcement combined with a number of outreach activities, including the “It’s Not a Game” media campaign.

This period of enforcement was funded by federal traffic safety funds distributed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) as part of the three previously mentioned statewide safety programs.
