Exclusive: Embattled Bulldogs star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has been questioned by police as his car is suspected of having been used in a drive-by shooting, 9News can reveal.

The 23-year-old AFL player has been cleared of any wrongdoing after a 71-year-old grandfather was shot at.

Douglas Lee, 71, was returning to his Glen Iris home on June 11 when his car was shot at three times.

“I heard a shot. which was quite surprising. I looked up, saw a car approaching me rapidly … but as I steered myself for the collision they passed me and fired two more shots,” Lee said.

The grandfather wasn’t injured.

The shooters sped away in a four-wheel drive, which police suspect was Ugle-Hagan’s.

Police believe the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

On June 3, Ugle-Hagan recorded a podcast, opening up on his mental health battle, saying he reached “a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn’t drive”.

“I just didn’t trust myself driving,” he told Rip Through It podcast hosts.

Nearly two weeks after the drive-by shooting, Ugle-Hagan reported on his social media that another vehicle, a Toyota ute belonging to him, had been stolen.

It’s understood Ugle-Hagan has been spoken to by police and ruled out as a suspect.

9News is not suggesting he’s involved in criminal activity.

Detectives are still trying to work out who was in the car at the time of the incident.

The Western Bulldogs Football Club has said in a statement that it “is aware of a police incident involving a vehicle registered to Jamarra Ugle-Hagan”.

“The Club is satisfied that Jamarra was not involved in the incident and that he had not been in possession of the vehicle for some time before it occurred,” the statement reads.

“Jamarra has fully cooperated with the subsequent police investigation.

“The Club is continuing to support Jamarra as he works through the management plan that was developed with him earlier this year.”
