SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A beloved former rabbi of Congregation Mickve Israel who served for over two decades died peacefully Wednesday, his family told .

Rabbi Arnold Mark Belzer served as the spiritual leader of Congregation Mickve Israel from 1990-2011.

The 81-year-old presided over the 275th anniversary of the congregation. He dedicated a new three-story building behind the synagogue to house offices, the religious school and Savannah’s Museum of Jewish History.

Congregation Mickve Israelis is third oldest Jewish congregation in America and was the first synagogue built in Georgia.

He passed with his wife of 57 years, Arline Belzer, by his side.

“Arnold was a deeply caring person with a big heart and an even bigger sense of humor,” Arlene said. “He wasn’t born here, but he loved Savannah like it was his own. He was proud to serve such a historic congregation, and he truly lit up when sharing its history or welcoming someone new. Our family was lucky to be close by, and his love was always front and center. His loss will be deeply felt not just by us, but also by the entire community he gave so much to.”

Rabbi Belzer’s funeral will be held at noon on Monday at Congregation Mickve Israel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Savannah or Congregation Mickve Israel.
