CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Contaminated washing and packing areas are some of the leading causes of foodborne illness in fresh produce according to the University of Illinois Extension. But, there are ways to reduce the risk of contamination — protecting both yourself, and others — from getting sick.

According to the U of I Extension, crops present a health risk if they are not properly sanitized, or handled correctly. To fight back against this, the U of I Extension will be offering a webinar to teach community members practical strategies to reduce contamination risks.

“The growing season is a busy time for fruit and vegetable farmers. Before we wrap up this season, let’s pause and reflect on one of the key reasons we engage in growing fruits and vegetables, which is to provide nutritious and safe food to our communities,” Lillian Nabwiire, food safety educator, said.

Organizers said whether you’re managing a small farm, a large operation, or even just a backyard garden, they’ll offer important guidance that everyone can learn from.

“In this webinar, we will focus on protecting fresh fruits and vegetables from contamination after harvest,” Nabwiire said.

The webinar will take place Sept. 10 from 4-5 p.m. It’s free to attend, but attendees must register by Sept. 3.
