BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. () — The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) is reminding residents that the state’s annual tax-free weekend will run from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3.

During the sales tax holiday, shoppers can purchase certain back-to-school items without paying the state’s 6% sales tax or applicable local taxes.

The tax exemption applies to all retailers, for both in-person and online purchases.

Items exempt from sales tax include:

  • School supplies such as calculators, musical instruments and headphones.
  • Computers and related technology, including printers and software.
  • Clothing and footwear, including caps and gowns, swimwear and school uniforms.
  • Bed and bath items such as bedspreads, sheets, pillows, towels and shower curtains.

All eligible items, new or used, qualify regardless of price. Shoppers are encouraged to consult the full list of exempt and non-exempt items here before making purchases.

Last year, South Carolinians saved more than $1.3 million dollars in sales tax.

Retailers are required to participate and cannot charge tax on eligible items during the weekend. Resources for businesses, including filing guidance, are available here.
