SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Kendall Gill golf outing has become synonymous with mid-July in Champaign County, bringing Illini fans out to the Orange and Blue Course in Savoy to play for a cause.

For 36 years now, the Flyin’ Illini great has returned to the area to raise money for Cunningham Children’s Home.

“I’m wondering how long we can keep this going because it’s 36 years, but you don’t see any fizzle out,” said Gill, a member of the 1989 Illinois Final Four team and All-American. “It’s always packed. We always fill the foursomes. And so I’m just glad that everybody continues to support.”

The homecoming provides GIll with a chance to catch up with his former coach’s widow, Mary Henson. Brad Underwood was in attendance for the 2025 gathering, too, and says Gill is always welcome in his gym.

“He’s always one of us,” said Underwood. “We talk about him a lot. We know what it means to give back to a community in a place that changed his life in so many ways. And, you know, it’s very, very impressive to see him take the time and the commitment 36 years later to keep wanting to come back and and never forget.”

In 35 playings of the golf outing, Gill has raised more than $850,000 for Cunningham Children’s Home.
