AIKEN, S.C. () – The South Carolina Department of Aging (SCDOA) and the City of Aiken are teaming up to host an event designed to help prepare older adults for various weather situations.
The event is being organized by the Senior P.R.E.P. (Planning and Resources for Emergency Preparedness) program through SCDOA. It’s scheduled for Tuesday, July 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lessie B. Price Aiken Senior & Youth Center on 841 Edgefield Ave NW in Aiken.
Mayor Teddy Milner, Aiken Department of Public Safety Chief of Police Charles Barranco, and
Councilwoman Lessie Price plan to speak at the event.
Senior P.R.E.P. also provided the following tips to help prepare for emergencies:
- Plan with family, friends, and caregivers to assist with limitations.
- Include necessary assistive technology and medical supplies (i.e., oxygen tank) in your emergency kit.
- Have a plan or backup resource to power essential medical equipment.
- Check with any agency providing you services for special provisions in an emergency.
- Have clear and concise instructions for rescue personnel regarding special needs or equipment.
- Map out accessible emergency exits at home and work.
- Consider getting a medical alert system that can be used to call for help.
