A train driver’s quick reflexes have helped avoid disaster, after an elderly driver became stuck on the tracks in Adelaide.

The driver has been fined after the near-miss in Bowden just after 6:30pm yesterday, which prompted a swift response from police and railway personnel to Hawker Street.

The man in his 70s took a wrong turn, putting his car onto the tracks where it became bogged in rubble.

“I (was) just worried… he can’t pull it out because he’s stuck,” one witness said.

The driver, realising his imminent danger, exited his car and called for help.

Luckily, the vehicle was spotted by an oncoming train driver, with a witness telling 9News the train honked repeatedly as a warning before coming to a stop.

“The train did stop in time but was beeping for quite some time before he got there,” the witness said.
