A Wisconsin woman who was 12 in 2014 when she nearly stabbed a classmate to death will be released from custody after more than a decade behind bars, a judge ruled on Thursday.

WTMJ reported that Waukesha County Circuit Judge Scott Wagner approved Morgan Geyser’s conditional release. After a sleepover celebrating Geyser’s 12th birthday, she and Anissa Weier lured a classmate to the woods  — where they stabbed her 19 times and left her for dead.

The girls claimed they carried out the attack to appease “Slenderman,” an internet meme. They also claimed they believed their families would be harmed if they did not attack their classmate, who survived.

Geyser and Weier were found not guilty due to mental disease or defect. Weier was released from a mental institution in 2021. Geyser, now 22, has remained institutionalized despite seeking her release on four occasions.

620WTMJ reported that Judge Michael Bohren, who has since retired, approved Geyser’s conditional release in January. The Department of Health Services challenged the conditional release, but the motion was denied in April.

Geyser’s release is scheduled for August 4. WTMJ reported that the court will formally implement the conditional release plan if no objections are filed in three days.
