COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) —  U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff’s push for a new elementary school to be built on post at Fort Benning cleared an early hurdle this week.

Ossoff, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Military Construction Subcommittee, says that nearly $130 million for the school is in a construction funding bill.

It recently passed the Appropriations Committee. Ossoff says there is a lot of work to be done to pass the bill.

“I just want to reiterate, we’ve gotten it through a Senate Appropriations Committee with bipartisan support, almost unanimous support, Republicans and Democrats,” Ossoff said. “That’s a major achievement in such a divided and polarized political environment.  But we still have to get this bill to the Senate floor.  I’m working to try to get that done as soon as next week.  And then we’ll still have to negotiate with the United States House.”

There are currently five schools on post at Fort Benning: four elementary schools and one middle school.
