A fisherman says he has spotted a crocodile on his sounder off the coast of Noosa, about 300 kilometres south of the predator’s usual habitat.

James Graham posted the image showing the silhouette of a crocodile to social media yesterday.

“It looked a lot like a croc to me,” Graham told 9News.

“Of course that makes no sense here in Noosa in the middle of winter, but the moment Kai, who was on the back of the boat, said ‘Oi, come have a look at this’, you just take one look and say, ‘that’s a croc’.

The typical southern border of crocodile habitat is Boyne River near Gladstone.

Sightings of crocodiles that far south are rare but not unprecedented.

“Kai and I have fished all of our lives and we’ve been in croc waters many, many times,” Graham said.

“You know what a crocodile looks like when it comes across your screen, and, and to me anyway, that’s it.”

A spokesperson from the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation encouraged people to report all sightings using the QWildlife app, or through the department directly.
