A former Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Minnesota Twins and other teams has been found guilty of murder and attempted murder.

Prosecutors said Dan Serafini broke into his in-laws’ Lake Tahoe home in 2021 and shot them, NBC4 in Los Angeles reported. They called the crimes financially motivated.

The gunman’s father-in-law, 70-year-old Gary Spohr, died on the spot, and his mother-in-law, 68-year-old Wendy Wood, survived the shooting and made a full recovery.

Wood died by suicide a year later, as previously reported by following Serafini’s guilty verdicts.

In addition to Scott, Serafini’s wife, Erin Spohr, testified during the trial, revealing that she was aware of Serafini’s relationship with Scott, who was one of her friends, according to SF Gate. Erin Spohr also said on the stand that she didn’t believe Serafini committed the murders as her parents willingly gave the couple $90,000 the day of the shooting.

Serafini’s sister-in-law, Adrienne Spohr, told reporters outside the courthouse that she feels justice has been served, according to NBC affiliate KCRA. “It’s been four years of hell,” she said.

About Dan Serafini

Serafini has gone from a life on the mound to one behind bars. He made his MLB pitching debut in 1996 for the Twins after the team drafted him out of high school in 1992. He later played for the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies.

His MLB career ended in 2007, when he was suspended for 50 games for failing a performance-enhancing drug test, Reuters reported at the time. He was working in a gold mine at the time of the killings, per SF Gate.
