() Ellen DeGeneres revealed she moved permanently to the United Kingdom because of President Donald Trump winning reelection last year.

The comedian confirmed the news to a crowd at Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, located in central England, according to NBC News.

DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved to the U.K. last year in what was supposed to be a “part-time house,” CNN reports. However, that changed after the presidential election.

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” she told the crowd, according to The Guardian. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”

Ellen DeGeneres: Everything is just better in the UK

The former talk show host described her life in the U.K. as “beautiful” and “clean.”

“Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here,” she said.

DeGeneres said that she and de Rossi would get married in the U.K. if the U.S reversed the legalization of marriage equality, according to CNN.

“The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage. They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it,” she said. “Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”

In June, U.S. Southern Baptists overwhelmingly endorsed a same-sex marriage ban and called on the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse its 2015 ruling that legalized marriage equality nationally.

DeGeneres isn’t the only comedian who’s relocated out of the country because of President Trump.

DeGeneres supports Rosie O’Donnell in latest back-and-forth with Trump

Shortly before Trump took office, Rosie O’Donnell, a vocal critic of the president, said she moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old daughter, according to The Hill.

“I moved here on Jan. 15, and it’s been pretty wonderful. I have to say, the people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming, and I’m very grateful,” O’Donnell said in a TikTok video in March. “I’m in the process of getting my Irish citizenship, as I have Irish grandparents.”

In a July 12 Truth Social post, Trump threatened to revoke O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship, calling her a “threat to humanity.”

The former “The View” host responded to the president on her Instagram, saying that Trump is afraid of her because she’s “a loud woman, a queer woman, a mother who tells the truth, an American who got out of the country b4 u set it ablaze.”

DeGeneres showed support for O’Donnell shortly after her response, writing, “Good for you, Rosie” on Instagram.

Last year, during her comedy tour, DeGeneres reportedly told the crowd that she would be “done” with show business after being “kicked out” for being “mean,” a claim she denied, according to local affiliate WJW.

“I am many things, but I am not mean,” she said in her 2024 standup show.
