Jamal Adams signs with Raiders to reunite with Pete Carroll

Former Jets defensive back Jamal Adams has found a new NFL home.

The three-time Pro Bowl safety is reuniting with former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll on the Raiders, the team announced Tuesday.

Adams played with Carroll for four years after being traded to the Seahawks in 2020.

It’s been a winding pro journey since the safety began his NFL career with the Jets in 2017 after he was selected sixth overall in that year’s draft.

During his time in New York, Adams played a crucial role in Gang Green’s secondary, amassing 273 tackles, 12 sacks, and two interceptions over three seasons and earning an All-Pro selection in 2019.

Despite this, he requested a trade in the 2019 offseason because he wanted an extension that the Jets were not prepared to offer. Additionally, he grew frustrated with the team and criticized Jets leadership—from ownership to the front office.

Last year, Adams said he matured and realized he did not handle his Jets exit in the best way when he reflected on his New York experience.

“[Jets] fans, I didn’t know I hurt ‘em like that,” he said. “I didn’t realize I had that much impact. And then obviously the older I got, I started to realize, ‘Bro, you had it all. You had it all besides the winning. Everything else, you had it all. Anything a player could ask for.’ But it didn’t work out for me. I asked for the trade out. And if I look back on it now, I would tell myself, ‘Don’t make an emotional decision.’”

The Jets finally granted Adams a move away from the organization in July 2020 with a deal to the Seahawks in return for two first-round picks.

Unfortunately for Adams, this is when injuries began to hamper his career. During his time in Seattle, he never played more than 12 games in a season.

In 2022, things hit a low point when Adams had to leave the first game of the season in the second quarter after a quad injury. It held him out of the rest of the season.

And after one more season in 2023, Adams was then let go by the Seahawks in March 2024.

Last year, he played with the Titans and Lions, suiting up in five total games.

In Las Vegas, Adams will reunite with Carroll with a secondary that lost Marcus Epps (Patriots) and Tre’von Moehrig (Panthers) in free agency.
