SAVANNAH, Ga. () — It’s the third annual Camp Ignite, where girls can go and learn what it takes to become firefighters, as well as other life skills.

“We want to provide them with a good foundation in life for their next opportunity,” said Tyler Barrett, a fire engineer for Savannah Fire.

Girls between 14 and 21-years-old can learn exactly what it takes to become a firefighter at the camp. This camp puts them through it all, from obstacle courses to medical training.

“The girls will go through different firefighting skills and learn how we do what we do,” Barrett said. “They’ll get a hands-on CPR class on top of some leadership team building and confidence building. They learn a little bit about being uncomfortable and overcoming challenges and obstacles.”

Camp attendee Jabriah Washington said her favorite part has been challenging herself and overcoming her fears.

“If you’re running up the tower. That’s five flights of stairs. A lot of people don’t go up and down five flights of stairs. And they do that, maybe every day more than one time a day its crazy,” Jabriah said.

Barrett said the most important part is seeing the girls connect and create lifelong bonds.

“Just hearing and seeing how the campers respond. And they’re laughing and they’re joking. I’ve heard a couple of them saying, hey, we’ve got to exchange phone numbers. That’s like what it’s about. It’s bigger than just firefighting,” Barret said. “We want them to be able to enjoy and learn about what the career is through those relationships and being able just to really come out here and challenge themselves.”

Camp Ignite will meet again in April of 2026 for Camp Reignite, where the girls will have a one-day refresher course on what they learned here. For more information you can click or tap here.
