HARLEM, Ga. () – AAA is reminding drivers to stay alert and exercise extra caution as children prepare to return to the classroom.

On Wednesday, AAA joined the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to launch the “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign. Representatives and law enforcement were present at North Harlem Elementary School on July 23 to help spread awareness.

“The bus is big. That means you can see it. The bus is yellow. It is bright enough to be seen if the lights are being activated. Any equipment that the bus activates that light so orange takes off, you can easily slow down. The worst thing to do is slow down. The best thing you can do if you’re not sure is stop,” said Captain Maurice Raines from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia. “It’s that simple. And those two decisions alone could save a life.”

Drivers who are convicted of illegally passing a school bus in Georgia face up to an $1,000 fine, 12 months in jail, or both.
