Police searching for suspected attacker

Security camera footage of a man suspected to be behind the attack of a resident of Haverford (Haverford Township Police Department).

A Pennsylvania man who had just found out his wife died was allegedly attacked by an unknown suspect who tried breaking into his son-in-law”s truck.

Haverford Township Police have asked the public for help identifying and apprehending a man who is connected to an assault on a 68-year-old man. Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola spoke to local ABC affiliate WPVI on Tuesday, days after the July 18 incident. Viola told the station that around 2:30 a.m. that morning, the man noticed that someone outside was allegedly trying to break into a truck in the driveway that belonged to his son-in-law. The homeowner confronted the would-be thief, who then allegedly attacked the older man and threw him to the ground.

Viola said that just an hour prior, the man found out that his wife — who had been in hospice care — had died and “his whole family showed up” to support him.

Viola also spoke to local CBS affiliate KYW and provided more details. He said the suspect threw the grieving man to the ground and punched him before fleeing the area. Viola told KYW that the homeowner “got cut, lacerations on his arm, he got banged up pretty good.”

In his comments to WPVI, Viola called the alleged incident “very disturbing,” adding, “You’re going through an incredibly traumatic part of your life, your wife died, and you want to be with your family and grieve. Then you have to put up with this on top of what you are already going through.”

According to police, the same suspect was seen on another doorbell camera about half an hour later in a different part of the neighborhood. Anyone who can identify is asked to contact Haverford Township Det. Mark Johnson at 610-853-1298, ext. 1234 or [email protected].
