After scoring an Emmy nomination for his work on the recent Hulu original series Paradise, Sterling K. Brown is returning to the streamer in another Hulu original.

Washington Black, which stars Brown alongside Ernest Kingsley Jr. and Tom Ellis, debuted on Hulu today, July 23. The historical drama is based on Esi Edugyan’s 2019 novel of the same name.

It follows an 11-year-old boy named George Washington ‘Wash’ Black (Kingsley Jr.) as he’s forced to flee his home on a Barbados sugar plantation for Nova Scotia in the early 1800s. He gets taken in by Medwin Harris (Brown), who also had a traumatic childhood as a Black refugee in Canada.
