CHICAGO (WLS) — Mayor Brandon Johnson says he will continue to seek progressive revenue solutions to address a billion-dollar budget deficit without raising property taxes.

In an interview with ABC7 Friday morning, Johnson said, “I am going to put forward a budget that reflects the values of working people. Progressive revenue is what we are going to fight for.”

When asked about what he meant about progressive revenue, Johnson said, “What I can say is there are too many loopholes in this city that allow for the ultra-rich and corporations to get away without having to pay their fair share in taxes. My proposal is going to reflect the values of working people. We are going to make sure we make these necessary investments to build more affordable homes, to invest in our youth, to make sure that we are investing in mental and behavioral healthcare services, that we are addressing community safety.”

Johnson also said closing the budget gap is not just about revenue.

ABC7 Political Analyst Laura Washington talks about the mayor’s interview.

“It is also about how government can be more productive and I am going to look into means in which we can modernize our budget system so that we can save taxpayer dollars,” Johnson said.

Johnson said furloughs and layoffs are not on the table.
