There were ground stops at both Midway and O’Hare airports Friday afternoon due to thunderstorms. Midway had delays of about 45 minutes and O’Hare had delays of about 25 minutes.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for funnel clouds Friday morning from LaSalle County through southern Cook County and south of that line.

Funnel clouds rarely touch the ground and typically do not pose a hazard, Butler said. Some were spotted earlier Friday near Ottawa.
