It took nearly three decades, but Adam Sandler has finally gifted the world a sequel to one of his most beloved comedies, Happy Gilmore.

Happy Gilmore 2, which is now streaming on Netflix, picks up thirty years after the events of the first movie, in which a hot-headed hockey player named Happy Gilmore (Sandler) discovered his talent for golf, and used it to raise money for his financially struggling grandmother. Directed by Kyle Newacheck, with a screenplay written by Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler, this sequel finds Happy once again returning to golf in order to pay for his daughter’s ballet school. Stars Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald are all back, while rapper Bad Bunny and filmmaker Benny Safdie joined the cast as newcomers. 

Happy Gilmore 2 is a nostalgia fest from start to finish. Even though we waited thirty years for this sequel, Sandler fans aren’t known for their patience. So, naturally, the next question is: Will there be a Happy Gilmore 3? Here’s what we know.

Will there be a Happy Gilmore 3 movie?

Happy Gilmore 3 has not yet been confirmed. Currently, there are no official plans to make a third Happy Gilmore movie.

When asked about whether there had been discussions about making Happy Gilmore 3, director Kyle Newacheck wasn’t very enthusiastic.

“I don’t know,” Newacheck told The Direct, when asked in an interview he had ideas for a third film. “I wouldn’t be too forward. I would be too forward to even think about it right now. The first one took [a] 29-year gestation period before they figured out what the second one is. I feel like whatever I come up with right now is going to be, not it, homie.”

Of course, the decision on whether to make a Happy Gilmore 3 would really be up to Sandler, the co-writer, producer, and star of the franchise. So far, the Sandman has not publicly indicated one way or the other whether he’s down for Happy Gilmore 3. Right now his schedule looks clear, with only the already-filmed Noah Baumbach movie, Jay Kelly, in Sandler’s upcoming releases. There’s also Sandler’s untitled film with the Safdie brothers that is in development, but we haven’t heard any updates on that since 2023 when Megan Thee Stallion was rumored to be circling the cast.

Never say never, but right now it’s not looking good for Happy Gilmore 3. However, Sandler has expressed interest in a sequel to another one of his hit ’90s comedies, The Waterboy. In a 2022 interview with Variety’s Award Circuit Podcast—the same podcast where Sandler soft-launched his Happy Gilmore sequel idea—Sandler was asked whether he’d do a Waterboy 2.

“That would be fun as hell. I love Mama. I love Henry Winkler. I mean, come on. He’s always gonna be Coach Klein to me,” Sandler replied. “But, I don’t know man, it’s funny. I don’t know what the ideas [would be].”

What is the Happy Gilmore 3 release date?

There is no Happy Gilmore 3 release date, because Happy Gilmore 3 has not been announced. While it’s certainly possible that Netflix will want to make Happy Gilmore 3—especially if Happy Gilmore 2 is a big hit for the streamer—we think fans may not want to hold their breath. The second movie took about three years to make, from Sandler first working on the script in 2022 to the release in July 2024. So even if Happy Gilmore 3 were green lit tomorrow, it’d likely take at least two to three years before the movie saw the light of day.

But again, there is no official news about Happy Gilmore 3 even happening. For now, you can watch and rewatch the first two movies on Netflix.
