The train derailed in Baden-Württemberg at around 6.10pm (local time) near Zwiefaltendorf in the Biberach district, reports German newspaper Bild.

A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: “Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed.”

German media report several people have been killed, but exact numbers remain unknown.

The train is said to have been travelling from Sigmaringen to Ulm, two cities about 43 miles apart in southwestern Germany.

Video footage from the shocking scene shows firefighters trying to rescue passengers while loud screams are heard.

Part of the train lies on its side, with the roof of one carriage open.

The carriages that came off the tracks lie in a wooded embankment among trees.

Firefighters were seen using saws to free passengers from the overturned train.

There had been a storm in the area shortly before the incident, according to reports.

Police told the German news agency dpa that the extent of the injuries is not yet clear.
