ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A deadly shooting has prompted the University of New Mexico to issue a shelter in place on its Albuquerque central campus on Friday morning.

Law enforcement on Friday afternoon was still searching for the suspect, according to New Mexico State Police. Community members are asked to avoid the campus.

Officials said UNM police first received a report of gunshots fired at Casas del Rio (Gila) student housing center, located at 420 Redondo Dr NE, on Friday. Responding officers discovered two individuals had been shot. One victim died, and the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus, UNM said in the alert.

UNM’s Lobo Alert service had first alerted followers to avoid the central campus after a police matter early on Friday morning. Hours later, officials urged those on campus to shelter in place.

“Central campus remains CLOSED while police continue to investigate a fatal shooting,” reads the latest Lobo Alert, which was posted just before 12 p.m. local time. “If on campus, continue to SHELTER IN PLACE.”

A freshman student-athlete told Nexstar’s KRQE that he and his friends were watching a movie on the fourth floor of the housing center when they heard noises coming from outside the building.

“I just heard like three pops, three loud pops, and then, uh, we thought it was like gunshots or something, so then we checked out the window and then, like, we just seen like random people running around,” said Jubilee Siitia-Tasi. “We heard another popping, and then after that, we were just confused on what was going on, so we just called it a night, and then I went to sleep.”

Jubilee Siitia-Tasi, originally from Seattle, said he has been living on campus since June 13 and has not experienced any other incidents.

“What happened last night is just crazy, cause I mean, I’m still trying to get used to the environment over here, so for that to happen it’s just kinda crazy,” Siitia-Tasi said.

The shooting comes just days before UNM wraps up its summer session on July 29. The fall semester will begin on Aug. 18.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene and actively investigating. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call UNMPD at 505-277-2241.

A student housing building was also the site of a shooting at the University of New Mexico in 2022, when a group of students attempted assault a basketball player from New Mexico State University, allegedly as revenge for a previous argument. Court documents indicated that the UNM students pointed a gun and attacked the athlete, after which he fired back and struck one of his attackers fatally.
