Fans are thrilled that Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson are back together again — even if it’s just for a movie.

The pair were spotted filming the upcoming trilogy Happy Hours together in New York City on July 21. Jackson was wearing a green button-top shirt while Holmes wore a pink flannel over black pants. They were later spotted again, pushing a baby stroller while filming for the same film.

The project is the first for the pair since their hit teen series Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003. As many fans will recall, Holmes and Jackson dated in real life for a year — before their characters had an onscreen relationship of their own.

The duo have remained good friends since Dawson’s ended, a fact that has made the new movie a reality. Here’s a look at Holmes’ and Jackson’s relationship timeline.

Holmes and Jackson were cast as Joey Potter and Pacey Witter, respectively, on the teen soap drama Dawson’s Creek. Holmes, who was 18 when filming began, told Glamour in April 2023 that shooting the series during those formative years was a unique experience.

“I felt like, as a teenager, I had so many different feelings, trying to go from being a girl to a woman,” she said. “And I felt like [creator Kevin Williamson] had this way of putting words to those feelings.”

Holmes and Jackson dated for around a year after the show debuted in January 2008. In an interview with Rolling Stone published in September of the same year, Holmes said she was “more apt to go for a dark-haired man” and described her experience with Jackson.

“I fell in love, I had my first love, and it was something so incredible and indescribable that I will treasure it always,” she admitted. “And that I feel so fortunate because he’s now one of my best friends. It’s weird, it’s almost like a Dawson-and-Joey type thing now.”

She continued, “He’s been in the business so long, and he’s really helped me. I respect him as a friend and as a professional.”

The series ended in 2003, which meant Holmes and Jackson also went their separate ways professionally. Still, the pair continued to be friends, something they spoke about frequently in the years that followed.

Both Holmes and Jackson have had high-profile relationships since the conclusion of Dawson’s Creek. Holmes and Chris Klein were together from 2000 until their breakup in 2005. She married Tom Cruise in 2006, and the pair would go on to welcome their daughter, Suri, that same year and before their divorce in 2012.

Since then, Holmes has been romantically linked to Jamie Foxx, Emilio Vitolo Jr. and Bobby Wooten III.

Jackson was in a relationship with Diane Kruger from 2006 to 2016, and was married to Jodie Turner-Smith from 2018 until their divorce in 2023. Turner-Smith and Jackson share one daughter, Juno, who was born in April 2020.

During an interview on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, Jackson explained, “Katie and I are very close. Busy and Michelle are very, very close.”

And while the pair don’t speak every day, he said, “Sometimes it’s not a weekly or monthly or even a half-yearly call, but when you’re together—there’s always that, ‘I know, you know.’”

Fans of the pair were delighted when they were photographed filming together in New York — and were even more ecstatic when Holmes revealed the duo are working on a trilogy of films called Happy Hours.

“I am so very grateful to be working again with so many of my wonderful friends on this film HAPPY HOURS. And working with Josh after so many years is a testament to friendship,” Holmes captioned a post shared via Instagram.

“HAPPY HOURS is a love story that includes so many people I adore. We can’t wait for everyone to see what we make,” she continued.
