Storm Team 3: Miserable heat continues today, Weather Aware Day

Hi there – StormTeam 3 Meteorologist Alysa Carsley here – let’s have a fabulous Monday! The miserable heat from the weekend stretches into this new work week as today is also a Weather Aware Day due to intense heat. Temperatures will quickly heat into the upper 90s and triple digits this afternoon.

Savannah will take a run at 100° again today. We were just shy of it Sunday with a high of 98°. Heat index values will be above 110° for several hours through this evening. This is dangerous humidity and will easily wear you down.

Only a stray shower and storm will be around this afternoon so very little heat relief. This begins to change through the rest of the work week. A trough will extend along the east coast and bring back afternoon scattered storms each day. This will help the intense heat back off just a bit with highs in the mid to upper 90s. Temperatures finally return to the upper 80s to lower 90s this weekend!

Heat Alerts:

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Beaufort, Jasper, and Chatham counties, as well as Wayne, Montgomery and Toombs Counties. Also including the coastal areas of Bryan, Liberty, and McIntosh counties, where heat indices could climb above 113°. This goes until 8 pm tonight.

Inland Counties are under a Heat Advisory through 8 PM today. Heat index values will be up to 112°.

Another heat advisory is set for tomorrow for the area as heat index values once again will be as high as 112°.

Safety Tips:

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
  • Stay hydrated and seek air-conditioned environments.
  • Keep a close eye on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, young children, and pets.

Relief in Sight:

  • Temperatures begin to ease slightly by Tuesday, with highs returning to the upper 90s as we see a chance of isolated storms.
  • From Wednesday into the weekend, expect higher rain chances with scattered storms, helping to lower temperatures to the mid-90s.
  • Don’t get too comfortable! Another wave of extreme heat is always possible as we move into August… It’s still the middle of summer!
