Storm Team 3: Hot & humid end of week, cooler, wetter weekend expected

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Wednesday afternoon and evening were hot and very humid with a few isolated showers and storms. Many locations had highs in the upper 90s to 100°F.

Heat index values were 105°-110°F. Locations that received some rain in the late afternoon and evening were able to cool off significantly.

A LOOK AHEAD

More summer heat is in the local forecast for Thursday and Friday. Afternoon highs will top out in the mid and upper 90s with heat index values over 105°F both afternoons.

A heat advisory has been issued for most of the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

A cold front that Strom Team 3 has been tracking is making its way through the mid-section of the country right now. It will slowly settle into the southeast by the weekend, and it will help to cool conditions off for several days.

Afternoon highs over the weekend and into next week will be trending below normal in the mid and upper 80s to about 90°F.

However, this approaching font will help to direct deeper Gulf and tropical moisture into the region, leading to higher rain and storm chances.

Heavy rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday with totals between 2-3″.

Locally higher amounts are possible. There is also a risk for some flooding issues in areas with poor drainage. Scattered showers and storms will also be expected to continue into next week.

TRACKING THE TROPICS

The basin remains quiet for now. There are a few weak tropical waves in the open Atlantic that we may need to watch long-term. Though no development is expected over the next five-seven days.

The tropical waves will be moving into the main regions we look for tropical development during August.

Much of the development begins to shift eastward and water temperatures begin to heat up as we approach the middle of the season. However, water temperatures now are trending near normal across the equatorial Atlantic right now.
