The park district said there have been several fires in Legion Park recent months, which can be dangerous for first responders and for those living in the park.

Legion Park is located at 3103 W. Peterson Ave.

The park district is working to connect residents with housing before the camp closes in September.

The Chicago Park District issued the following statement:
“Closing an encampment is never a decision we take lightly. The people living in the Legion Park encampment are facing extremely difficult circumstances, and our foremost concern is their safety and well-being. This encampment is being closed because the permanent and makeshift structures on site are unsafe. Several fires have occurred in recent months, putting residents and first responders at serious risk, especially given the lack of a nearby fire hydrant and the difficulty of accessing this wooded area. These conditions endanger those living in the encampment but also violate the Park District’s lease agreement for Legion Park with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. Before any closure takes place, the Chicago Park District is working closely with the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) to conduct outreach and connect residents with shelter and a pathway to permanent housing. Signage will be posted at Legion Park later this week with the exact closure date in September. DFSS will continue regular engagement to ensure residents are offered shelter and services in advance of that date. At the same time, the Park District is actively working to update its policies regarding homelessness in public parks. We are engaging with external partners, including advocacy and service organizations, to ensure our approach is compassionate and responsive to the needs of people experiencing homelessness. Every action we take is guided by our commitment to safety, dignity, and the belief that housing, not displacement, is the true solution to homelessness. The decision to close this encampment, and the approach we are taking, reflects that commitment and places the well-being of encampment residents at the center of our efforts.”
