A Florida woman with a checkered driving record is facing a slew of charges months after she crashed her Mercedes-Benz into a car carrying four people, killing one, before she tried unsuccessfully to sneak away because “her boyfriend told her to,” cops say.

Beverly Yvonne Slaughter, 25, stands accused of 14 charges including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving a license suspended causing death. The crash occurred around 1 a.m. April 29 at the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and NW 24th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, a probable cause arrest affidavit said.

Slaughter was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class east on Sunrise approaching 24th at a “high rate of speed.” As she was entering the intersection, a Nissan Altima had a green left turn signal light and was making a left. Slaughter”s Mercedes T-boned the Altima. After the crash, video shows Slaughter allegedly running from her vehicle.

A Fort Lauderdale police officer arrived on scene and spotted Slaughter “walking extremely discreet” along the back parking lot of a McDonald’s, the affidavit said. The cop ran up to Slaughter and took her into custody, cops said. When asked why she fled, Slaughter allegedly said it was because “her boyfriend told her to run away,” cops wrote.

The victims in the Altima, two of whom were suffering from serious injuries, were rushed to the hospital. One died on May 2 after she was taken off life support.

After Slaughter’s arrest on Wednesday, prosecutors argued in a bond motion that she should remain in custody based on her driving record. Her license has been suspended since 2021, and she was convicted of driving without a license two years ago. She also was arrested for driving under the influence, fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer and reckless driving in 2023.

Prosecutors say she has shown a “disregard for the safety of the community” and “there are no conditions of release reasonably sufficient to protect the community from risk of physical harm to person.”

A judge agreed and ordered her to be held in the Broward County Jail without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Friday.
