Friday was the first day of August, and Chicagoans know it’s only a few weeks before summer is over. Some took advantage of the day at Fiesta del Sol.
“I like the fact that we have choices,” festivalgoer Tonya Johnson. “All this delicious food to choose from I’m not sure what we are going to eat yet but we’ll see.”
Some childhood friends attended Fiesta Del Sol Friday.
“I love the memories with it, because I used to, we used to come with like a lot of friends,” festivalgoer Marcela Chavez said.
The annual four-day festival in Pilsen along Cermak will draw more than a million visitors. While the temperatures may be great for the outdoor free festival, the air quality is not.
Jimmy Tello, the manager of Xurro, hopes people can tolerate the conditions to enjoy the weekend.
“I definitely think people should inform themselves,” Tello said. “We encourage people to still come out, enjoy themselves, enjoy the Fiesta Del Sol.”
Maria Gaytan is a nurse with Alivio Medical Center. She urges people with chronic respiratory issues to heed warnings and limit time outside.
“Opt for wearing a mask… N95 mask try to keep your time outside not more than an hour, and if you do have rescue medications, make sure you have them available,” Gaytan said.

If there is an air quality health issue, or something else, Fiesta visitors can get help from staffers.
“The ambulances are set up on two key points on opposite ends of the Fiesta, and the people you should be looking for people you should be looking for is the security,” Gaytan said. “You’ll notice they have the pink shirts.”
Fiesta del Sol began Thursday and goes until Sunday at 10 p.m. It is free to the public.
