The Voice will soon be ringing in its whopping 29th season, and it won’t be without some major updates. Fans were thrilled with an announcement made last week that revealed a former coach would be returning to their seat, bringing with them an impressive record.
Indeed, it’s been confirmed that music icon Kelly Clarkson is officially coming back for the upcoming season of the reality TV show. Here’s everything we know about Kelly’s comeback—and other changes that can be expected in the new season, which stand to make the competition steeper than ever.
Kelly Announced Her Return To The Show
This past week, Kelly took to her official Instagram account to share the big news with her followers. She shared an image of herself alongside the other coaches, Adam Levine and John Legend, along with a caption detailing her enthusiasm for her return:
I’m so excited to be back coaching on The Voice!
In the Instagram announcement from The Voice‘s own page, the program promised that the new season would have “three coaches [and] one incredible season.” Later on in the promo, coach John Legend assured viewers that, unlike last season, this one would have some new twists that were sure to “turn the competition upside down.”
Longtime viewers of the show will know that Kelly coming back to the franchise is a big deal. She’s widely considered to be one of the most successful coaches on The Voice, as she’s been crowned the winner of four different seasons. That is, she was responsible for coaching the winning contestant during Seasons 14, 15, 17, and 21.
This is not to say that John and Adam don’t have impressive records of their own. Each man has been a coach on the show for a handful of seasons; Adam coached the victor during Seasons 1, 5, and 9, while John coached the victor more recently in Season 16.
Season 29 Will Have Some Other Twists
The upcoming season will be slightly different from previous ones in that it’s a “battle of champions.” This means that Season 29 will be an all-star competition, where the coaches will have a unique power unlike ever before: they’ll have the chance to bring back not one, but two singers from past teams in order to take the stage and compete. As reported by Deadline, the three coaches will duke it out in a “Triple Turn Competition,” seeing who can score the contestant with the most three-chair turns. Whoever does will automatically earn a Super Steal to use for a later round in the competition.
Another major twist in the upcoming season is that of fan involvement at a whole new level. In the aforementioned Deadline article, fans learned that they could have the chance to influence voting for the first time in the franchise’s history:
For the first time in show history, a new voting block comprised of super fans and past VOICE artists will have the opportunity to get in on the fun firsthand, experiencing the competition as part of the in-studio audience voting for their favorites in real time during the semi-finals and finale.
The report promised that the new season will be “infused with fast-paced, competitive elements” in a way that the show has never seen. As of this article’s writing, there has yet to be an official air date announced for Season 29, but no doubt it’ll be one that fans don’t want to miss.
