Alabama correctional officer charged with drug crimes

ODENVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — An Alabama correctional officer was arrested Thursday and charged with drug crimes.

According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, its law enforcement services division executed a search warrant at an Odenville residence. The ADOC stated narcotics agents recovered the following items:

  • Methamphetamine – 8.87 pounds
  • Promethazine liquid – 350 grams
  • Synthetic cannabinoid – 340 grams
  • Oxycodone pills – Nine
  • Sprayed paper – 326 grams
  • Cell phones – 156
  • Cellular hotspots – Two
  • Marijuana – 19 pounds
  • Crack cocaine – 100 grams
  • Cocaine powder – 16 grams
  • Flakka precursor powder – 610 grams

In a related search, 2.5 pounds of marijuana and 60 grams of methamphetamine were recovered. Calvin Bush, a lieutenant at St. Clair Correctional Facility, was arrested and placed on mandatory leave pending dismissal.

Bush is charged with promoting prison contraband, trafficking fentanyl and trafficking marijuana, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office. His bond was set a $3.01 million.

The ADOC stated the investigation has focused on people suspected of trafficking illegal substances and contraband into the St. Clair County prison. The ADOC is working to identify more people involved in the criminal operation.

“This operation demonstrates a continued commitment to fighting the smuggling of illegal drugs and contraband into our correctional facilities,” ADOC Commissioner John Hamm said in a statement. “Prison violence is directly impacted by the flow of illegal drugs.”
