Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has insisted that he is not like other Nigerian politicians who make promises they don’t intend to keep, saying his pledge to serve only one term if elected president remains unchanged.

In a statement released on Sunday, Obi acknowledged that Nigerians are right to be sceptical of political promises, given the track record of many leaders.

However, he stressed that his own political journey has always been guided by integrity and accountability.

“They are judging me by their own standards — where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth,” he said.

Obi maintained that four years is enough to deliver purposeful leadership, citing global icons like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who made significant impacts within limited time in office.

“If elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office. In fact, I believe that service should be impactful, not eternal,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor defended his promise as a principled stand against the trend of African leaders clinging to power.

He recalled his time in office, where he focused on improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure while managing public funds prudently.

“In my political life, my word is my bond,” he said. “When I entered politics in Anambra State, I made clear and measurable promises to the people… I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation.”

Obi responded to recent remarks suggesting anyone vowing to serve a single term needs psychiatric evaluation, saying such comments reflect the broken political culture in Nigeria, not his own intentions.

“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution, which clearly stipulates a four-year renewable tenure,” he said.

Obi listed his top priorities if elected to lead the country. These include tackling insecurity, strengthening education and healthcare, promoting small businesses, fighting corruption, and transforming Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven one.

“These are not utopian dreams. They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years. A new Nigeria is POssible,” he said.

“One of the greatest American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, served only four years, yet his legacy endures as a model of principled leadership. Another iconic figure, John F. Kennedy, did not even complete a full term, yet his vision and ideals continue to inspire generations.”
