BEECH ISLAND, Sc () – Silver Bluff Missionary Baptist Church in Beech Island is celebrating its 275th anniversary, marking its status as one of the first and oldest African American churches in the United States.

Founded in 1750, Silver Bluff has played a significant role in the growth of many churches in the CSRA. The church’s long history is a source of pride for its members, who gathered to commemorate this milestone.

Pastor of Silver Bluff Marvin Morgan, expressed his amazement at being part of such a historic institution, saying, “Amen, it’s just amazing to be a part of it and I’m here as the 18th pastor of the Silver Bluff Baptist Church and that’s just history for me to be a part and trying to be able to lead God’s people to God’s kingdom.”

Jan Morgan wife of Marvin and the First Lady of the church, shared her feelings about the anniversary, stating, “I can’t even imagine, it’s such, such a blessing to be part of it.”

Delores Richardson, who has been a member for 60 years, emphasized the importance of the church’s legacy, saying, “Our history is our legacy, and I’m glad to be part of that legacy. We tell our history with pride everywhere we go with pride, honor and dignity and knowing our roots and our essence makes me feel proud to be part of this history.”

Linda N. McKie, a trustee and fourth-generation member, highlighted the generational ties to the church, saying, “My ancestors were here, I am the fourth generation of members at Silver Bluff. Being able to pass it on to my kids and my grandkids to let them know that history starts right here within.”

Dorian Hazel, Chairman of the Deacon Board, expressed his deep connection to the church, stating, “It means the world to me, I grew up here, my parents brought me here, I just love being here.”

Silver Bluff Missionary Baptist Church plans to continue its legacy and keep its doors open for many more centuries, celebrating the rich history and community ties that have defined it for 275 years.
