Back-to-school and safe driving: Guide

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — When kids go back to school, roads get busier and your daily commute to work takes a couple of extra minutes as streets get congested with school buses.

This guide will help you ensure that you drive safely during this time of year:

According to the National Safety Council, most bus-related incidents where children lose their lives occur while they’re walking to or from the bus, whether it is because they get hit by a bus or because a driver is illegally passing a stopped school bus.

  • Slow down. This is the cardinal rule when driving in back-to-school season. Whether that is in a school zone or residential area, slowing down will allow you to see your surrounding better, act quickly in case of an emergency and prevent accidents.
  • Put your phone down.
  • Don’t stop at a crosswalk. By forcing pedestrians to go around your vehicle, you’re increasing the chances of an incident.
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians. No matter how late you’re running to work, getting side-eyed by your coworkers is better than running over a child. Don’t do it.
  • Modify your schedule to account for heavy traffic.

The Garden City Police Department (GCPD) is also reminding drivers about Georgia’s school bus laws:

  • If a school bus stops at a two-lane road with no median, all traffic must stop.
  • When a school bus stops in a multi-lane road with a center turn lane, all vehicles traveling in both directions must stop.
  • If a school bus stops in a divided highway—with dirt, grass or barrier median—vehicles traveling behind the school bus must stop. Meanwhile, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction must exercise caution.

A little goes a long way. By being a little cautious during your daily commute, accidents can be prevented.
