DAVENPORT, Fla. – A 62-year-old man from England is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder and battery after he allegedly tried to drown his daughter-in-law at a Davenport vacation rental home, a news release stated.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the Solterra Resort on Sunday around 5:19 p.m., where witnesses and the victim told authorities that Mark Gibbon had been arguing with his 33-year-old daughter-in-law in the resort’s swimming pool before attempting to drown her.
The two were arguing about Gibbon’s grandchildren, the release said.
Officials said that the victim’s 9-year-old daughter jumped into the pool in an attempt to stop Gibbon from drowning her mother.
According to the release, the victim stated that Gibbon only stopped after witnesses at the resort said they called the sheriff’s office.
“Because Mr. Gibbon couldn’t control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
Mark Gibbon was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail, the sheriff’s office said. He faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and battery.
